Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are in the midst of a divorce battle following a plane ride incident in 2016. Caught up in the messy divorce are their kids and a joint owned winery Chateau Miraval whom the estranged couple is also in court.
The duo’s legal battle over Chateau Miraval, the winery they purchased together in 2008, reached a new battleground when the actress’ lawyers filed a motion claiming Pitt has a “history of physical abuse.” In documents filed with the Los Angeles Superior Court and obtained by CNN, her lawyers say that negotiations to sell her share of the winery to Pitt broke down when he attempted to impose a restrictive NDA.
The NDA would have “prohibited Angelina Jolie from speaking (other than in court) about her estranged husband’s abuse of her and their children by attempting to tie Pitt’s reputation to Miraval’s business.” In an excerpt obtained by People about the case, the lawyers allege that Pitt’s “history of physical abuse of Jolie started well before the family’s September 2016 plane trip from France to Los Angeles.”
This further refers to the plane incident that led the actress to file for divorce later that year. The excerpt claims that “this flight marked the first time he turned his physical abuse on the children as well. Jolie then immediately left him.” There are no further details about prior incidents of abuse.
The new court filing is the latest development in the ongoing legal battle between the former couple, following Pitt’s 2022 lawsuit against Jolie. In the suit, Brad Pitt asserted that Angelina Jolie sold her half of Chateau Miraval to Russian tycoon Yuri Shefler’s Stoli Group without his consent, despite the two allegedly having agreed to not sell their shares without the other’s approval.
In 2023 court filings, his laws stated that her intent to sell her share was “vindictive” due to an “adverse custody ruling,” according to CNN. In a statement shared to the outlet on Thursday, the actress’s lawyer, stated, “Mr. Pitt refused to purchase Ms. Jolie’s interest when she would not be silenced by his NDA.”
“By refusing to buy her interest but then suing her, Mr Pitt put directly at issue why that NDA was so important to him and what he hoped it would bury: his abuse of Ms Jolie and their family. After eight months of delays, this motion asks the Court to force Mr. Pitt to finally produce that evidence, he continued.
Details of what happened to the Jolie-Pitt family on a 2016 flight from France to California emerged in 2022. Her lawyers had filed a cross-complaint against Pitt, claiming that Pitt had “choked one of the children and struck another in the face,” “grabbed Jolie by the head and shook her,” and “poured beer on Jolie [and] poured beer and red wine on the children,” according to the New York Times.
Jolie had filed for divorce days later. The filing also claimed that an FBI agent “concluded that the government had probable cause to charge Pitt with a federal crime for his conduct that day,” although the FBI report states that all parties involved agreed to not go forward with criminal charges. At the time of the filing, Pitt’s representative told CNN, “Brad has accepted responsibility for what he did but will not for things he didn’t do.”
