Jeanne Du Barry, Johnny Depp’s latest project has not attracted the crowd as expected. The movie marks his first return to the screen following the famous lawsuit between him and ex-wife Amber Heard in 2023 after she wrote an article calling out for domestic violence.
The result of the article led to his being cancelled in Hollywood. He lost movie roles including that of his most famous character Jack Sparrow alongside others. Ultimately, he sued her for defamation and won with the actress mandated to pay him up to $15 million in damages for winning the case. However, it was reduced to $10.35 million due to a Virginia law cap on punitive damages.

Despite his win, it appears that fans are yet to warm up to him again as his French-language independent film titled Jeanne du Barry, is not receiving the attention it ought to get. Not many moviegoers have been to the cinema to watch the movie that marked his return to the US theatres. Now, the movie is in the news but not for the right reasons.
The reasons are tied to his ex-wife Amber Heard. Several social media posts alleged that the new movie was taken from US cinemas for failing to draw in crowds resulting in little box office returns. However, his fans noted that the report was not true but was sponsored by Amber Heard’s supporters with intent to discredit the work.
The truth about Jeanne du Barry being pulled out of theatres is not connected to poor ticket sales. However, it was only slated to show for only five days in the contract signed by U.S. film distributors and the company Fathom Events. The movie was set to show in the US theatres May 2-May 6.
The movie plot details the life of Louis XV played by Johnny Depp alongside his mistress Jeanne Bécu, played by Maïwenn. Jeanne Bécu was a child of an impoverished seamstress in 1743 who finally rose through the Court of Louis XV to become his last official mistress.”
Amid the controversy surrounding Jeanne du Barry, moviegoers who watched had some glowing commendations for the formerly cancelled actor. One dan who watched the show commended the cast writing ‘Finally got to see Jeanne Du Barry on its last night in US theaters, and I’m glad I did.’
Another viewer wrote ‘Seeing it on the big screen was well worth the wait! The costumes, the scenery, the actors, were all mesmerizing.’ Apart from the latest project, Johnny Depp is seriously considering coming back as Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Per Daily Mail source, “Johnny has always been so touched by how many people love and resonate with the character, so anything is possible.”
He is also set to feature in the Dior campaign and is set to appear in commercial and film appearances later this year.
