On April 27, Terry G released a song titled Mary Jane which he collaborated with popular afrobeat singer Wizkid. Then, the singer shared a snippet of their feature song on his Instagram in a bid to promote the song.
Weeks after, the singer shared that his featured artist, Wizkid had ordered him through his legal representatives to remove the song from every streaming platform in a new podcast. He further revealed that the song has now been removed.
Terry G also noted that the reason for the order is connected with not clearing the song with Wizkid’s team before its release. Are you wondering what song clearance means, hold on! TBN got you.
A song clearance simply means obtaining legal rights or permission from the copyright holder(s). The copyright holder may include a featured artist, a writer, a music producer etc. The permission be obtained directly or through their label/publisher.
Simply put, Terry G. did not obtain the necessary permission from Wizkid’s team and he believes he has a good reason for that. Talking to Afrobeats podcast he noted that the practice of clearing songs was not popular at the time they made the song.
“I didn’t clear the song I made with Wizkid [‘Mary Jane’] because, in my era, we don’t clear songs; we do collaborations based on love. The lawyers have reached out to me to take the song down.” However, he blamed himself for not evolving with the times while revealing that he had already taken down the song.
“To be honest, we’ve got to be professional and do paperwork. Because if that doesn’t work, nothing will work. So trust me, I have pulled down the song. For the platforms that are yet to take it down, I will make sure it is taken down on those platforms, too, soon.”
The collaboration with Wizkid comes after Terry G slammed the Essence singer noting that his music genre is not afrobeats at all. Subsequently, the latest release with the singer landed him in fresh bits as social media users trolled him mercilessly.
