Anne Hathaway makes a shocking reveal in her latest interview with Vanity Fair. The Devil Wears Prada star disclosed that she suffered a miscarriage in 2015 when she was starring in an off-Broadway play and also spoke about her fertility issues.
In the upcoming April issue of Vanity Fair magazine, the Witches star explained the story behind a post she shared on Instagram in 2019. Talking about her struggles Anne Hathaway said, ‘The first time it didn’t work out for me. I was doing a play and I had to give birth onstage every night.’ she found this traumatic because the storyline of her character is that she will give birth in the play. The show saw her starring in Grounded, a one-woman play about a female U.S. Air Force pilot who is grounded when she gets pregnant.
The star did not explicitly say when the miscarriage happened but the play ran for six weeks in April of 2015. ‘It was too much to keep it in when I was onstage pretending everything was fine. I had to keep it real otherwise… So when it did go well for me, having been on the other side of it – where you have to have the grace to be happy for someone – I wanted to let my sisters know, ‘You don’t have to always be grateful. I see you and I’ve been you.’ she said.
The Vanity Fair interview noted that the star got emotional at this point. ‘It’s really hard to want something so much and to wonder if you’re doing something wrong.’ Anne Hathaway also shared her experience after feeling that there was a lack of information about miscarriages leading women to feel ‘isolated.’ ‘I thought, Where is this information? Why are we feeling so unnecessarily isolated?’ she said.
‘That’s where we take on damage. So I decided that I was going to talk about it. The thing that broke my heart, blew my mind, and gave me hope was that for three years after, almost daily, a woman came up to me in tears and I would just hold her because she was carrying this [pain] around and suddenly it wasn’t all hers anymore.’

Sending you extra love.’
Apart from her fertility struggles, the actor further shared her struggle with anxiety which caused her problems on movie sets and that she felt humiliated oftentimes. She also said she was grateful to director Christopher Nolan for believing in her and giving her a beautiful movie that proved her acting chops. She starred in his 2014 movie Interstellar.
