According to Angelina Jolie, she made that call to the assassin by herself because she was suicidal and depressed. She was also quite young at the time, only 22 years old. In her 2001 interview with IMDB, she shared details of the harrowing experience,’ This is going to sound insane but there was a time I was going to hire somebody to kill me.”
The decision to use an assassin was because it would be easier for her family and friends to bear instead of just killing herself. In another interview with The Face 2 years after, she described her search for a hitman noting that ‘They’re not that hard to find in New York. According to Angelina Jolie, she wanted the suicide attempt to be staged as a robbery so that family and friends would be less pained over her death. And she had the perfect plan to make this possible. The idea was to space the given period of time she would withdraw cash, so as to avoid raising suspicion.
When she eventually contacted the hitman, his approach humbled her and changed her mind. She said, “He was a decent enough person and asked if I could think about it and call him again in two months.” fortunately for her, she was able to navigate the time in her life, opting later to heal.
